...and they understood the advantages!
If ever there was a time when advertising was essential, then this is that time! Every businessman knows, we're in a time when customer bases have been cut to a fraction and disposable income has all but dissapppeared. Attracting customers has never been more difficult or vital. And that is why Cattle Baron (Hermanus) took advantage of B-roll advertising.
The task was on 2 levels, to advertise a new take-away service and to widen the customer base to include younger people! video photo 1

The 1st thing was to create a separate logo and hook for the service. We came up with a simple imojji with a tag beneath. You can see it on the photo on the right. The hook literally sprang to mind:
"Good to go...Too good to share!"

From here on the B-roll storyline simply fell into place. We employed our own model, Khanyishe, and asked a local dance school if they might know of 2 girls who would like to appear in a video.
The Just Dance Academy came on board with enthusiasm. 2 young ladies arrived for the 1st production meeting along with Nadine, the academy owner.
So, with the cast organised, the storyboards were compiled, the crew was engaged, the venue was prepared and finally the filming happened followed by many hours of editing. Click on the photo over there, you'll see the result...

video photo 2 So that's "B-roll" advertising
B-roll is 30 seconds of high energy video, with a single story line, designed to make an impact and leave a lasting impression.
With a little imagination, they can be used to advertise almost anything. They can cost as little as a page ad' in a local paper (one like 1 To-Go would cost just R2950), but they can be a whole lot more useful. For one thing, you can use them over and over again!
You will see that we have not "Date-stamped" the 1 To-Go video with shots that include Covid masks. Also, the cast costumes and venue shots aren't dated or genre specific, which means this advert can be used over and over, literally for years (you can't do that with a newspaper ad now can you!). So, when it comes to 'value-for-money', you can't beat a B-roll video ad'.

There really is no limit to what we can advertise with B-roll. If you click on the photo on the left you will see that it advertises fresh lemons. But this B-roll demonstrates that lemon is often an important ingredient in cocktails. It's making an important and often unusual point that B-roll really shines, with information packed high-energy adverts.
The advert subject can be a new product or an old established brand, a new service or an established venue. We can film a real location or we can computer generate a virtual one. We can film real characters or computer generate virtual ones. Anything is possible, the imagination to visualise it is the only limitation, and over the years we've developed quite an agile imagination!

Just remember that your competitors are just as eager as you are to attract new customers. Everything that's available to you, is also available to them. And you can bet they already know about B-roll.
Now is not a good time to be left behind!

Safe, Responsible, Professional...
It was a subject raised by a new client, "How can you go making films in the middle of a pandemic?"
The answer is all about being a professional film maker, and it's why you should always employ the professional. There are procedures and rules that we work to all the time. Like all employers, we must make sure our staff are working in a safe place. To give you an idea, let's look at just some of the issues we had to accommodate for "1 To-Go"
1)   Parental permission
2)   Chaperone on set
3)   Sanitising everyone and every thing
4)   Social distancing (venue customers)
5)   Everyone must be paid
Some of the items are obvious and straight forward, but remember, we have to make a video that looks "normal"!
So, when we scripted and story-boarded the video, we choreographed it so the cast and crew were always apart from venue customers and staff! And of-course, masks were worn by everyone, except by the cast when they were actually being filmed (just the way you see it on TV everyday) to avoid date stamping the video into Covid time.
The final point is really the one that marks the professional, "Everyone must be paid". Your business doesn't give away your products, and you pay your employees. Same for us. Our films are not free and our crew is always paid, in cash, at the end of each shoot.

So that's Aktileda. Safe, Responsible, Professional...
